Goldfish in the Deep End

The corporate retreat center's pool shimmered with that artificial blue that only exists in places trying too hard to be luxurious. Elena sat on the edge, her legs submerged in water that felt strangely warm, like bathwater left to cool. Three margaritas deep, she was watching the goldfish pond nearby—those orange flashes darting through murky water, living their entire stupid lives in circles.

'You're going to fall in,' said Marcus, appearing beside her with fresh drinks. His tie was already undone, the first button of his shirt open. He was the kind of handsome that felt dangerous, the kind that made you do things you'd regret in Monday morning meetings.

'The goldfish,' Elena said, gesturing vaguely. 'They don't even know they're trapped.'

Marcus laughed, sitting close enough that their shoulders brushed. 'They're fish, Elena. They don't have existential crises. That's your job.'

Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating the moment with stark clarity. Then thunder rolled through, shaking the deck chairs. A stray cat—gray, battle-scarred—crept from the bushes, eyeing the goldfish with predatory focus.

'He's going to eat one,' Elena said, feeling suddenly sober. 'Should we stop him?'

Marcus set down his drink. 'Nature's a bitch.' But his hand found hers in the dark, fingers interlacing with practiced ease. 'You and me, we're not so different from those fish. Just swimming in a bigger pool.'

The lightning flashed again, and in that instant, Elena saw it all: the五年 of stolen kisses in copy rooms, the way they'd both destroyed marriages without ever acknowledging it, the corporate ladder they'd climbed together by stepping on everyone else. They weren't trapped. They'd built the pool themselves.

She pulled her hand away and stood up, water dripping down her legs. The cat sprang. Something splashed in the goldfish pond.

'I think I'm done swimming,' Elena said. 'Some circles are too small to break out of.'

Marcus didn't follow. He just watched her walk away, another orange flash disappearing into the dark.
