Goldfish in the Deep End

Maya pulled her bucket hat lower, Instagram-curated waves hidden underneath. Friday night at Tyler's pool party – sophomore year's first social battlefield – and she was already losing.

Her iPhone vibrated against her thigh. No new notifications. Just Jordan still not texting after their almost-moment at the skate park, leaving her on read for three days straight.

"Hey." Tyler materialized, chlorine droplets sliding down his abs. "Having fun?"

"Yeah," she lied, thumbing her phone screen like it might magically produce Jordan's name. "Just... hanging."

Tyler nodded, drifted toward his friends. Maya watched them laugh, splash, exist so effortlessly. She stayed on the deck, safe and dry and totally alone.

Then she saw it: a mason jar on the snack table, and inside, a single goldfish swimming in tiny, desperate circles. Tyler's carnival prize from earlier, probably abandoned when the real party started.

The fish pressed against the glass, orange scales flashing like something that wanted to be seen.

Maya's phone buzzed. Jordan finally.

*ur on?*

The goldfish jumped – a desperate, impossible leap – and landed on the concrete, flopping toward the pool's edge.

Maya's iPhone sat right there, too. Precious inches from splashing into the water.

Save her lifeline or save the fish?

She dropped the phone.

No, literally dropped it – screen cracked against the deck – and scooped up the goldfish in both hands, sprinting toward the pool. She practically dove in, fully clothed, hat and all, releasing the fish into the deep end where it shimmered and vanished into something bigger.

When she surfaced, sputtering and soaked, everyone was staring.

Tyler was grinning. "That was... actually kinda legendary."

Her iPhone lay shattered on the deck. Jordan's text remained unanswered, irrelevant. But Maya grinned back, water dripping from her stupid hat, feeling something like herself for the first time all night.

"Worth it," she said.

And meant it.
