Goldfish in the Deep End

The orange glow from Maya's hair caught the sun as she climbed onto the diving board, and I swear my heart skipped a beat. I was fifteen, awkward, and totally out of my element at Tyler's pool party.

"You gonna stand there all day or jump?" Maya called down, grinning.

I hesitated. The water sparkled like crushed diamonds, but my brain was too busy overthinking everything. Meanwhile, somewhere in the kitchen, Tyler's little sister was probably still crying about her carnival goldfish that had somehow escaped its bowl earlier. Weird flex, but okay.

Maya dove in, surfacing with water droplets clinging to her eyelashes like tiny stars. I cannonballed in after her, making way too big of a splash.

"Smooth," she laughed, swimming closer. "So, I heard you made varsity baseball."

"Yeah," I said, treading water like my life depended on it. "But honestly? I kind of hate it."

Her eyes widened. "Really? But you're like, the star pitcher."

"That's the thing," I admitted, feeling weirdly vulnerable. "My dad's the coach. It's not really my thing. I'd rather be doing... literally anything else."

Maya treaded water for a moment, studying me. "That's actually kind of brave. Saying you don't want something everyone thinks you should want."

Just then, Tyler's voice rang out from the deck. "DUDES. The goldfish is in the POOL."

We both stared at the tiny orange fish darting through the chlorine like it owned the place. Its scales gleamed like abandoned pennies.

Maya burst out laughing. "That goldfish has more freedom than either of us."

"Wanna ditch this party?" I heard myself saying. "We could... I don't know, go somewhere?"

She smiled, and in that moment, something shifted. Like finally jumping into water you'd been terrified of.

"Yeah," she said. "Let's bail."

We climbed out, dripping wet and barefoot, leaving the goldfish to conquer the deep end on its own terms.
