Goldfish & Green Smoothies

Maya's phone buzzed with another Instagram notification—#PoolParty2024 trending. She stared at her reflection, wondering if she'd ever feel ready for sophomore year. Her mom's latest phase: "clean eating," which meant spinach smoothies that tasted like wet lawn clippings.

"You need antioxidants!" her mom insisted, handing her a murky green cup.

Maya chugged it, gagging slightly. At least it might help her fit into that bikini she'd bought online—the one that looked completely different in person.

Meanwhile, her little brother Leo was crisis-mode because their cat, Nacho, had developed an obsession with his carnival goldfish, Orange Julius.

"Nacho is literally plotting murder," Leo announced, clutching the fishbowl like a grenade. "I can't leave him alone."

"You're not bringing Orange Julius to the party."

"Then Nacho wins."

The pool party was everything Maya dreaded—perfect bodies, filtered aesthetics, and the varsity squad clustered like they owned the water. She stayed poolside, clutching her spinach smoothie like armor, until something splashed her.

Orange Julius. In the pool. Leo had snaked him in.

Chaos erupted. People screamed. Leo jumped in, clothes on. Maya's crush Jake actually laughed—not mean, but genuine. "Dude, is that a goldfish?"

Suddenly everyone was in the water, forming a rescue mission for a three-dollar fish. Maya waded in, forgetting her body-image spiral, forgetting to feel awkward. For once, nobody was performing. They were just teens trying to save a stupid fish.

Nacho showed up on the pool deck, tail twitching, judging everyone.

Later, wrapped in towels, eating leftover pizza with actual cheese (spinach diet officially dead), Maya caught Jake's eye. He smiled—no filters, no performance.

"Your brother's goldfish is legendary," he said.

Orange Julius swam safely in his bowl. Maya felt lighter somehow. Like maybe real life—messy, awkward, weirdly wonderful—was actually better than the curated version.

Nachos streaked past, probably still plotting. Whatever. Maya laughed, genuinely, for the first time all summer.
