Goldfish Gate

Maya's boyfriend Ethan was obsessed with his phone — classic red flag, right? But this was worse than usual. She'd catch him texting furiously in the bathroom, hiding his screen whenever she walked by, laughing at messages he wouldn't share. Her friends said she was being paranoid. Her mom said she was overthinking. But Maya's gut screamed that something was off.

One Friday night, she finally did it. She waited until Ethan passed out at 2 AM after their Netflix marathon, then gently pried his phone from his grip. Heart hammering, she scrolled through his texts. And there it was: not another girl, not cheating, but something weirder. Ethan had joined some cryptocurrency pyramid scheme called "Pyramid Protocol" and was recruiting his friends.

"Babe," she confronted him the next morning, waving his phone like evidence. "You're literally in a pyramid scheme? What is this, 2022?"

Ethan's face went beet red. "It's not a pyramid scheme, it's decentralized finance! You just bring in three people, and they bring in three people, and—"

"That is literally a pyramid."

The fight was epic. They broke up. She blocked him on everything. The school year ended, and she spent the summer avoiding mutual friends and wondering how she'd missed that her boyfriend was the type to fall for a get-rich-quick scam.

Then came junior year. New girl Sasha transferred in — gorgeous, confident, mystery vibes. She sat next to Maya in homeroom and they bonded over their hatred of cafeteria pizza. One day, Sasha invited Maya over, and that's when Maya saw it: a goldfish bowl on her dresser, with a single bright orange fish swimming in circles.

"Meet Bubbles," Sasha said fondly. "He's my emotional support pet."

"Cool," Maya said. But something felt familiar. The fish. The bowl. The way Sasha talked about it...

Then it clicked. A throwaway comment Ethan had made months ago: "My cousin has this emotional support goldfish, it's supposed to be really calming."

Maya started putting things together. The pyramid scheme wasn't just about money — Ethan had been trying to recruit people into some weird crypto wellness cult that sold "healing" crypto coins and used emotional support pets as marketing hooks. His cousin was the goldfish girl. Sasha was his cousin's ex-girlfriend. The whole thing was messier than Maya had imagined.

"Wait," Maya asked Sasha. "Do you know Ethan Miller?"

Sasha's face darkened. "That pyramid scheme guy? Yeah, he tried to get me into that cult last year. Total toxic energy."

They looked at each other for a second, then burst out laughing. Sometimes high school drama is just a bunch of interconnected weirdness, and the only way through it is finding the one other person who gets it. Maya finally felt like she could breathe again. The pyramid scheme was behind her, the spying phase was over, and somehow a goldfish had brought her to a real friend.
