Goldfish Dreams at the Pool

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her dad's oversized fishing hat like a shield. The water glittered with that fake innocent look, but she knew better. Swimming had never been her thing—not since the incident at summer camp when she'd frozen at the deep end, everyone watching.

Her golden retriever, Buster, waited by the fence, tail thumping against the wood. He was supposed to be her emotional support animal for this exact situation, but apparently, dogs at pool parties were a liability. Whatever.

"Hey, you coming in?" called Liam, the guy she'd been crushing on since algebra. His friends laughed about something she couldn't hear.

"Maybe later," Maya mumbled, adjusting the hat that made her look like a derected tourist.

That's when she noticed the goldfish bowl on the snack table. Some party favor someone would inevitably forget. The tiny orange fish swam in endless circles, its mouth opening and closing like it was trying to say something profound about the human condition.

"That's kind of messed up, right?" Maya said, pointing at the bowl.

Liam shrugged. "It's a goldfish. They have like three-second memories or something."

"Actually, that's a myth," she found herself saying, surprising herself. "They remember stuff for months. They probably remember every single time someone taps on their glass like that."

Liam's friends went quiet. He actually looked interested.

"For real? That's... kinda deep, honestly."

Something shifted. Maybe it was standing up for the goldfish, or maybe it was just finally speaking up instead of shrinking inside her oversized hat, but Maya felt brave enough to say: "I still haven't learned to swim properly."

Liam blinked. "Same. I'm just pretending."

They laughed, and it wasn't at her this time. Buster barked from the fence, like he approved.

"Wanna hang out by the shallow end?" Liam asked. "We can be goldfish together. Just swim in circles and pretend everything's fine."

Maya finally took off the hat. "Yeah. That sounds perfect."

The goldfish swam on, completely unaware it had just made a teenage girl's night.
