Goldfish Confessions at the Pool Party

Maya's iPhone was practically burning through her pocket as she stared across the pool party. Third time this week she'd found herself cyber-stalking Leo's Instagram, feeling like a total creep but unable to stop. That was basically her brand: awkward, obsessed from afar, and conversing primarily with her goldfish named Captain Fin.

The water shimmered like liquid diamonds under the afternoon sun, and everyone looked so effortless in their swimsuits while Maya stood there in her oversized t-shirt, feeling like a spy who'd forgotten how to blend in. She'd been observing Leo for weeks now—not in a creepy way (she hoped), just... thorough research. She knew his favorite pizza topping (pineapple, controversial), his dog's name (Max), and that he had a scar on his left knee from falling off a skateboard in seventh grade.

"Maya! You coming in or what?" Leo shouted from the pool, splashing water at her.

Her brain short-circuited. "Uh, maybe later!"

He started wading over, and Maya's heart did that thing where it forgot how to beat properly. This was it. The moment she'd been overanalyzing for weeks. She could practically hear Captain Fin judgmentally blowing bubbles at her from back home.

"You okay?" Leo asked, dripping wet and suddenly too close. "You've been standing there looking like you're solving world peace."

"Just... thinking."

"About what?"

"Stuff." Smooth, Maya. Real articulate.

Then his dog Max came barreling out of nowhere, shaking water everywhere like a furry disaster. Maya yelped and jumped back—straight into someone carrying a red solo cup. The crash was spectacular. Soda everywhere. Her t-shirt soaked. Everyone staring.

She wanted to evaporate. Disappear. Transport herself to another dimension where social embarrassment wasn't a thing.

But Leo just laughed. Not mean laughing. The kind that made his eyes crinkle up all genuine-like. "Max! You chaotic little monster!" He grabbed some napkins and started helping Maya blot at her shirt. "You okay? That was actually pretty legendary."

"Legendary embarrassment, maybe," she muttered, face burning hotter than the sun.

"Nah. Max has done way worse. Last week he stole someone's sandwich right out of their hand at the park. This is nothing." He looked at her, really looked at her. "Hey, I've seen you in Mr. Harrison's class, right? You always sit by the window."

She nodded, not trusting her voice.

"You seem cool. Quiet, but cool." He paused. "Wanted to talk to you for a while, actually."

Wait. WHAT?

"For real?" The words escaped before she could filter them.

"Yeah. You've got this vibe, you know? Like you're always observing everything. Like a spy." He grinned. "I've been trying to catch your eye all week."

That night, Maya sat at her desk, Captain Fin swimming lazy circles in his bowl behind her. Her iPhone buzzed with a new Instagram notification—Leo had tagged her in a photo from the party. Caption: "Water wars with the coolest person I know. Thanks for being a good sport about Max. 😂"

She typed and deleted three different responses before settling on something simple and not weird. Then she turned to her goldfish, who'd been her only confidant through like eight different crushes and numerous social catastrophes.

"Captain," she whispered, "I think this one might be different."

The goldfish just blew a bubble and swam to his plastic castle, either in agreement or complete indifference. But Maya didn't care. For the first time in forever, she wasn't just watching from the sidelines. And tomorrow? Tomorrow she might even actually get in the pool.
