Goldfish Complexion

Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, clutching her emergency vitamin C supplements like they were magical charisma pills. Tonight was Emma's party—her first actual high school party—and her stomach was doing enough backflips to qualify for the Olympics.

"You've got this," she whispered to her reflection, then immediately choked on her own spit.

Her phone buzzed. Fox—the gorgeous, unattainable senior with the lazy smirk that made girls forget their own names—had posted a story. Maya's heart did that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she so much as saw his profile picture. Someone had started calling him Fox back in freshman year because he was "sly like a fox" (which was honestly the most embarrassing nickname ever, but somehow he'd made it look cool).

At the party, Maya gravitated toward the solo cups of fruit punch like they were a lifeline. She was halfway through her third cup when she felt eyes on her.

"Spinning in circles?"

She jumped, nearly splashing punch everywhere. Fox. Standing there. Actually talking to her. His dark hair was messy in that way that probably took twenty minutes to perfect, and he wore that damn smirk like it was permanently etched onto his face.

"What?" Maya squeaked, then immediately wanted to die.

"You're over here by the fish bowl," Fox nodded toward the centerpiece, where a lone goldfish swam in lazy circles. "Kinda looks like you're contemplating its entire existence."

The goldfish blinked its globular eye at them both, utterly unimpressed.

"I—" Maya started, but then she felt it. That cold panicky dread. She'd had spinach in her teeth at lunch, and she'd aggressively flossed it out, but what if—

Her tongue darted over her front teeth.

No spinach. Thank every deity that ever existed.

"Earth to Maya?" Fox's voice dropped, softer this time. "You good?"

She looked up. His eyes weren't mocking. They were just... waiting. Like he actually cared about the answer.

"Yeah," she said, surprised to find it was true. "Just... existential goldfish vibes, you know?"

Fox laughed—a real laugh, not his usual cool-guy chuckle. "Honestly? Same."

And just like that, the unattainable senior became something else: a person. A person who maybe, just maybe, thought she was worth talking to.

The goldfish continued its circles, utterly unaware it had just changed everything.
