Goldfish Bowl Moment
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket as she stood outside Tyler's house, the bass from inside already making the sidewalk vibrate. She gripped the plastic cup in her hand so hard she thought it might crack, her stomach doing that thing where it felt like she was drowning in **water**, even though she was perfectly dry on dry land.
"You got this," she whispered to herself, thinking of her pet **goldfish**, Finback, back home in his bowl. He never seemed stressed, just floating there like he owned the place, even when her little brother tapped on the glass.
Inside, the air was thick with cheap cologne and something that smelled like berry **cable** – those fruity vape things everyone was obsessed with. Maya squeezed through the crowd, feeling like she was wearing a giant neon sign that said "doesn't belong here."
"Yo, Maya!" Tyler shouted over the music, way too enthusiastic. "Glad you made it!"
She forced a smile. "Yeah, wouldn't miss it."
Tyler leaned in close. "Hey, you're smart, right? Like, actually smart? Can you help me with something?"
Maya's instincts screamed **FOX** – be clever, be careful, this is a trap. But her curiosity won.
"What's up?"
Tyler pointed toward a group of guys across the room. "That's Jordan. He's been telling everyone his uncle works at Spotify and can get anyone verified. I think that's total **bull**, but I can't call him out without proof."
Maya glanced at Jordan, who was holding court like he owned the place. Something about his confident swagger didn't sit right.
"I got this," she said, surprised by her own boldness.
She made her way over, introducing herself with a confidence she didn't feel. By the end of the night, she'd casually worked the conversation around until Jordan slipped up – his "uncle" was actually a cousin who interned there for like two weeks.
Walking home, Maya pulled out her phone to text her best friend about how she'd exposed him. As she typed, she realized she wasn't thinking about Finback or wishing she was back in her safe bubble anymore. Maybe high school parties weren't her scene, but calling out **bull** when she saw it? That was definitely her vibe.
