Goldfish at the Pool Party

bearfriendgoldfishpool

Maya's palms were literally shaking as she gripped the plastic bag containing her new goldfish—which she'd definitely won fairly at the carnival, thank you very much. Her best friend Kai had been hyping up Jordan's pool party for weeks, and Maya had spent the entire morning overthinking her outfit like her life depended on it.

"You're literally spiraling again," Kai had said when they FaceTimed earlier. "Just vibe. You look fire."

But standing there in Jordan's backyard, watching everyone goof around in the pool while she clutched a goldfish in a bag like it was her emotional support animal? Maya felt like she was failing at social interaction 101.

The goldfish—she'd named it Goldie, because originality wasn't exactly her strong suit when she was nervous—kept staring at her with those weird fish eyes. Maybe it was judging her. Probably judging her.

"Hey, is that... a fish?" Jordan appeared beside her, dripping wet and wearing that ridiculous inflatable bear tube around his waist. The bear's cartoonish grin made it look like it was plotting something.

"Yeah." Maya held the bag up like it was a prize. "Won it fair and square."

Jordan cracked up. "That's iconic, honestly. You coming in or what?"

And then her bear was gesturing toward the pool with this ridiculous bear tube just bobbing around his waist like a weird beige halo, and everyone was laughing and splashing and looking like they belonged in a commercial, and Maya realized that literally nobody cared that she'd shown up with a random goldfish.

She set Goldie's bag carefully on a patio table, kicked off her slides, and jumped in. The water was perfect. Kai was already waiting, splashing her immediately.

"Took you long enough, drama queen," they said, but they were smiling.

Maya grinned back, floating on her back and staring up at the sky while Jordan's ridiculous bear tube drifted past like a chubby cloud. Maybe high school wasn't actually that deep. Maybe sometimes you just had to jump in the pool with your friends and your weird impulse-pet goldfish waiting on the sidelines.

Later, they'd give Goldie a proper home. But right now, the water felt like freedom, and for the first time all day, Maya wasn't overthinking anything at all.
