Goldfish at the Apex

Marcus stood at the corner office window, his palm pressed against the glass, thirty floors of concrete and steel beneath him. The corporate pyramid he'd spent two decades climbing stretched below like topographic lines of ambition. At 47, he'd finally reached the apex—corner office, seven-figure bonus, the kind of power that made secretaries tremble.

His assistant had gifted him the goldfish last month—a sleek orange comet swimming endless circles in its 20-gallon tank. Marcus had found himself mesmerizingly watching it, hypnotized by its spiral trajectory, its memory supposedly seven seconds long.

"You look tired," Elena had said that morning, reading his palm at her desk during the merger celebration. She was the corporate psychic, hired for team-building events, now tracing the life line across his skin with manicured fingers. "Your head line splits. Conflict between what you want and who you are."

He'd laughed, pulled his hand away. "I have everything I wanted."

"Your palm says otherwise." Her eyes held something like pity.

Now the goldfish swam toward the glass wall, turned, swam back. Same path, same routine. The corporate structure below was visible through the window—departments nested within divisions, executives upon vice presidents upon managers, all supporting the weight of the few at the top.

Marcus pressed his palm flat again. Elena's words lingered: "Your heart line breaks in the middle. A love that couldn't survive."

The goldfish broke its pattern, darting toward the plastic fern, then spiraling up.

Sarah had left him three years ago. "You're climbing something, Marcus, but it's not success. It's just taller."

The goldfish pressed its mouth against the glass, oxygen bubbles streaming from its gills.

Marcus's palm tingled where Elena's fingers had traced. She'd said nothing about his future. Only about what he'd already lost.

The pyramid below twinkled with office lights, thousands of people climbing, each convinced they were going somewhere. The goldfish swam another circle.

Marcus wondered what the fish would do if someone opened the tank.
