Goldfish and Lightning Strikes

The house party was already low-key awkward when I spotted the goldfish bowl in the corner. Maya was across the room, laughing at something Jordan said, her laugh all bright and genuine while I stood by the snacks table feeling like a total NPC in my own life.

"Truth or dare, but you gotta swallow the goldfish if you bail," announced Tyler, whose entire personality seemed to revolve around making everyone uncomfortable.

I should've walked out right then. But Maya glanced over at me, and something in my brain short-circuited. I stepped up like an absolute dumbass.

The dare: Run around the block in my underwear while holding the goldfish bowl.

"You're not actually gonna do it," Maya said, and that was it. I was doing it. Outside it was pouring rain, the kind that comes down sideways, and every few seconds lightning would flash and make everything look like a glitchy video game.

So there I was, sprinting down the street in my boxers at 11 PM, clutching this glass bowl with one confused goldfish named Gerald (Tyler named him, obviously), lightning turning the world strobe-light colors, rain soaking everything. I felt ridiculous and electric and alive in a way I hadn't felt in months.

Maya was waiting on the porch when I got back, shivering but grinning. She took the bowl from my hands.

"You're an idiot," she said, but she sounded kinda impressed. "We're keeping Gerald."

We ended up sitting in her garage with the goldfish between us, watching the lightning through the cracks in the door, talking about everything and nothing until the storm passed and I forgot I was supposed to be embarrassed.

Sometimes the most humiliating moments become the ones that actually make you feel real. Plus, Gerald's living in my bedroom now, and Maya texted me this morning to ask if he misses her. I'd say it was worth it.
