Going Live At Midnight
Maya's hands were straight-up shaking as she wrestled with the tangled mess of cables behind her PC. Three HDMI cords, two ethernet lines, and approximately zero chill.
"You got this," she whispered, then immediately contradicted herself with, "No you don't, this is gonna be a total disaster."
Her first Twitch stream was supposed to start in T-minus seven minutes, and the universe was clearly testing her commitment. Luna, her roommate's orange tabby cat, had already knocked over her vitamin water—which was still dripping onto the carpet, because obviously. And now Max, the family's elderly golden retriever, had decided that RIGHT NOW was the perfect time to wedge his massive fluffy body between her desk and the wall.
"Max, buddy, I love you, but you're literally blocking my entire setup."
He thumped his tail enthusiastically, completely unbothered.
Maya's phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up:
kenzie: r u streaming yet???
jordan: WE'RE READY
maya: technical difficulties. cats. dogs. cable hell.
kenzie: same. good luck queen u got this 💪
She took a breath. Reminded herself why she was doing this. Why she'd spent three weeks building her PC, why she'd practiced her commentary until her throat hurt, why she was about to put herself out there for strangers to judge. Because somewhere out there, someone needed to see a girl like her—unpolished, anxious, but still going for it.
The final cable clicked into place. Her monitor flickered to life. OBS Studio flashed green.
"Okay," Maya said to the room. Luna yawned from the windowsill. Max finally moved, leaving a dust bunny in his wake.
She hit "Start Streaming."
"Yo, what's up everybody," she said, voice only slightly trembling. "Welcome to the first stream. I'm Maya, I'm lowkey freaking out, and we're gonna play some Minecraft while I figure out life."
The viewer count ticked up. 5. 12. 28.
A chat message scrolled past: <user3> first time here, ur setup is so cool
Another: <gamerchic> SAME i'm also new to streaming
Maya grinned. Maybe she didn't need to be perfect. Maybe she just needed to show up.
"Alright chat," she said, reaching for her orange soda. "Let's do this."
