Glow Up Protocol
The cat clock on Maya's wall meowed at 2 AM — third time that night. She tossed her phone onto the pillow, watching the loading symbol spin. Again. The cheap coaxial cable her dad swore was 'fine for gaming' had other plans, buffering right when Tyler's story updated.
'Seriously?' she groaned, flopping onto her back. Three weeks into summer and she was still doomscrolling, still watching, still invisible.
The glow-up started Monday. That was the plan.
'You need more greens,' her mom had said, dropping a bag of pre-washed spinach in the fridge. Maya had stared at it like it was radioactive. But somewhere between her second failed attempt at a TikTok smoothie and watching her ex-bestie's vacation pics, the spinach became not just food, but a statement. Like, look at me, I'm someone who eats spinach now. I'm intentional.
She stood in the kitchen at midnight, blending the spinach with whatever else she could find. It tasted like grass and desperation. The vitamin gummies on the counter caught her eye — the ones her little brother got for being 'picky.' Whatever. She downed three. This was basically self-care.
The cable finally cooperated around 3 AM. Maya refreshed Tyler's profile again, feeling equal parts pathetic and powerful. This was basically spying, right? Watching, learning, collecting data. It wasn't creepy if it was... research. For the glow-up.
Her cat, Luna, wound around her legs, purring like she knew something Maya didn't.
'You think he'll notice?' Maya whispered. Luna blinked slowly, unimpressed.
The spinach smoothies continued. The vitamins (now properly purchased, not stolen from a seven-year-old's stash). The cable was still garbage, but somehow the buffering felt less like failure and more like... pause. Space to think about who she was becoming, not just who she wanted Tyler to see.
Friday, she posted her own story. No filter. Just her, mid-laugh, holding a green smoothie she'd actually made herself. Spinach mustache and everything.
Her phone buzzed. Not a like. A DM.
From Tyler: 'That smoothie looks terrifying. You gotta teach me how to make those.'
Maya stared at the screen, then at Luna, who was now sleeping on her glowing-up self like it was nothing. The cat opened one eye, as if to say, told you.
She typed back: 'First lesson: don't watch the blending process. Trust me.'
The cable could wait. Maya was already live.
