Glow Up At Midnight
Maya's iphone screen glowed against her face at 2 AM, the only light in her room as she doom-scrolled through seemingly perfect lives. Everyone was at Jordan's party except her—again. Her thumb hovered over a text she'd typed fifty times: 'hey, sorry i couldn't make it.' But she backspaced it. Again.
'You're doing that thing,' said her best friend Riley, voice cracking over FaceTime. 'The overthinking spiral thing. Dude, Jordan literally didn't even notice you weren't there. They were too busy failing at flirting with Sam.'
Maya flopped backward onto her bed, missing the cat entirely as Mittens hopped onto her stomach with a 'mrrow' that sounded judgmental. 'This cat sees my darkest moments,' Maya groaned. 'Like, she KNOWS I'm a loser.'
'You're not a loser. You're just...' Riley paused. 'In your era. The awkward phase before the glow up.'
'But what if this IS the glow up?' Maya gestured at herself—old sweats, frizzy hair, zero followers gained that night. 'What if I peaked in seventh grade and nobody told me?'
The next morning, still buzzing from anxiety and three hours of sleep, Maya did something impulsive. She grabbed the orange box dye from the back of her bathroom cabinet—the one she'd bought months ago and never used. Three hours later, her dark brown hair was a screaming, neon orange that looked like a traffic cone had exploded on her head.
Her phone blew up. Her mom sent seven question marks. Her little brother took a photo for his Snapchat story (caption: 'my sister is going through it'). Maya considered crawling under her bed to die with Mittens.
But then her phone pinged again. Jordan: 'yooo that hair goes HARD ??'
Riley: 'slay. actually iconic.'
Sam, who'd never acknowledged Maya existed until today: 'looks fire'
Maya caught her reflection in her phone screen—orange hair wild, cat purring in her lap, notifications pinging like crazy. She grinned. Maybe the glow up wasn't about becoming perfect. Maybe it was about becoming weirdly, unapologetically yourself—and finally, people actually noticed.
