Glass Walls at the Pyramid

The corporate gala glittered beneath the pyramid-shaped skylight of the Luxor Grand, where Elena found herself mesmerized by the massive aquarium occupying the center of the ballroom. Schools of tropical fish darted through artificial coral, but it was the solitary goldfish in the corner that held her attention—orange and oblivious, swimming endless circles in its glass prison.

"You've been staring at that fish for twenty minutes," Marcus said, materializing beside her with two champagne flutes. His voice carried that practiced warmth that used to make her feel safe, now only making her wonder what else he'd practiced lying about.

"She reminds me of us," Elena said, accepting the champagne. "Swimming in circles, thinking we're going somewhere new."

Marcus's jaw tightened. A micro-expression. Three years of marriage had trained her to read his face the way she read financial reports—carefully, looking for discrepancies. "Not tonight, El. The merger announcement is in ten minutes."

The merger. The reason they'd flown to Vegas. The reason Marcus had been working late every night for six months, his phone always face-down, his laptop password changed quarterly.

"I know about the offshore accounts," she said, her voice barely audible above the ambient jazz. "I know you're the one leaking prototypes to Apex."

Marcus set down his champagne glass. The crystal met marble with a sharp clink that seemed to silence their corner of the room. "Who told you?"

"You did," Elena said, watching the goldfish surface, its mouth opening and closing in silent speech bubbles. "Every time you said 'trust me.' Every time you came to bed smelling like someone else's perfume—sandalwood and something chemical. You never could pull off corporate espionage, Marcus. You lack the imagination for true deception."

"I did it for us," he said, and the pathetic thing was that he believed it. "The payout from Apex—"

"—will land you in federal prison," she finished. "I already forwarded everything to the FBI. They're probably arresting your contact at Apex right now."

The water in the aquarium caught the light, casting rippling shadows across Marcus's pale face. For a moment, he looked like the goldfish—trapped, confused, suddenly aware of the glass walls that had always surrounded him.

"Why?" he whispered.

"Because some fish," Elena said, setting down her glass and turning toward the exit, "eventually realize there's an entire ocean beyond the bowl."
