Glass and Stone

iphonepyramidfriend

The iPhone vibrated against the mahogany conference table, its screen illuminating in the darkened room. Elena stared at the message, her breath catching in her throat. It was from Marcus—her best friend, her mentor, the person who'd championed her rise through the pyramid of corporate hierarchy at Arkham Capital.

'They're offering me your seat on the executive committee. I took it.'

Three years Elena had spent climbing this pyramid scheme of ambition, each rung sharper than the last. She'd trusted Marcus implicitly, shared her vulnerabilities over countless coffees, celebrated each promotion together. She'd even recommended him for the parallel track that led to where they both stood now—on the precipice of the C-suite, only one chair remaining between them.

The office lights flickered on. Marcus stood in the doorway, his expression unreadable in the harsh fluorescence. 'You saw it.' It wasn't a question.

Elena's laugh escaped before she could stop it—dry, hollow, utterly devoid of humor. 'I thought we were friends.' The word felt foreign on her tongue, stripped of meaning. 'I thought you were the one person in this entire pyramid who wouldn't—'

'Wouldn't what? Want what you want?' Marcus's voice lacked its usual warmth. 'We can't both sit in that chair, Elena. And I have a family to think about.'

She looked at him—really looked at him—and realized she'd been looking at a stranger all along. The pyramid had demanded its sacrifice, and their friendship had been the offering.

Elena stood, smoothing her skirt with trembling hands. She picked up her iPhone, deleted the message, deleted his number. Some pyramids were built from stone, she realized. Others were built from the bones of people you thought you knew.

'Congratulations, Marcus,' she said, and meant it not at all. Then she walked out of the office, out of the pyramid, and into something she hadn't expected: the possibility of building something real, somewhere else.
