Games of Deception

Elena traced the lifeline on her palm, the skin still raw from yesterday's padel match. The fortune teller had said she'd meet a stranger who'd change everything. She hadn't mentioned the stranger would be her husband's doubles partner.

Marcus was on the court now, his sweat-stained shirt clinging to his back as he smashed the ball toward the fence. His fox-like grin—that same predatory charm that had captivated her twelve years ago—was directed at Sarah. Their opponent. His something else.

"Your form's improving," Sarah called, wiping her forehead with the hem of her shirt. The sun caught the silver threading through her dark hair.

Elena's chest tightened. She remembered finding the receipt for the necklace in Marcus's wallet. The lunch receipts. The text messages at midnight.

Their golden retriever, Buster, whined at the fence gate, tail thumping against the wood. Marcus's colleagues often joked that Buster was more loyal than Marcus. Now the joke just felt cruel.

She'd cooked his favorite meal last night—fresh spinach ravioli with cream sauce. He'd barely touched it, claiming work stress. Later, she'd seen the notification light on his phone. Sarah's name.

"Elena, you coming?" Marcus waved his racquet. "Sarah wants to play mixed doubles."

The invitation hung in the humid air. Beneath it, another question: How much would she tolerate? How long could she play this game?

She smoothed her skirt, lifted her chin. "Why not."

Some games, you played to win. Others, you played until you couldn't anymore. Today, holding the racquet, Elena finally understood the difference.
