Game Point at The Palms

The Palms Country Club wasn't exactly my scene. But when Maya texted "u coming? 🎾" I couldn't say no even though my stomach did that nervous flip-flop thing.

I'd never played padel before—some hybrid of tennis and squash that all the rich kids seemed obsessed with. Standing at the gate, I felt like everyone knew I didn't belong. My racket felt foreign in my hand, the grip too smooth, too new.

"You're overthinking it," Maya said, suddenly beside me. Her hair was messy-perfect, and she had this way of looking at you that made you feel like you were the only person in the world. "It's just hitting a ball, Chase."

Easy for her to say. She'd been playing since she could walk.

The first game was a disaster. I tripped over my own feet, missed every ball, and when I finally connected with one, it sailed straight into the palm trees bordering the court. The group of older guys by the fence laughed. I felt my face burning.

But then something clicked. Maya's partner had to leave early, and she grabbed my arm. "Play with me?"

We fell into this rhythm. She'd call shots, I'd scramble to reach them, laughing when I failed and cheering when I didn't. The palm trees swayed above us, casting shadows that danced across the court. For the first time all summer, I wasn't worrying about fitting in or looking cool or any of the stuff that usually consumed my brain.

Then my phone buzzed in my pocket. I'd forgotten my charging cable at home, and I was at 4%. Mom wanted to know if I was coming to dinner. The spell broke.

"You good?" Maya asked.

"Yeah," I said, though suddenly I wasn't. Because this moment, this feeling of being exactly where I was supposed to be—it couldn't last.

"Same time tomorrow?" she asked, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

I grinned. "Bet."

Walking away, I realized something: maybe I didn't belong at The Palms, but maybe that didn't matter. What mattered was finding moments where you felt like you did, even if they were just game points in a match you never expected to play.
