Fruit on the Nightstand

Maya found the papaya on his nightstand, already softening at the edges. Three days ago, Liam had bought it during his health kick—something about enzymes and digestion, along with those expensive vitamins she'd seen charged to their joint account. Now the fruit sat there, a small rotting monument to his latest self-improvement phase.

Her iphone lit up with another text from him: 'Need space to figure things out.' Space. The word tasted like bile.

She ran her fingers through her hair—still damp from the shower she'd taken after discovering his departure—and caught the scent of his shampoo. Pine and something synthetic. He'd always complained when she used his products, but this morning, the bathroom counter held only her own things. He'd taken everything that was his.

Well, almost everything.

In the corner of their bedroom sat that ridiculous bear costume he'd refused to throw away since college. 'Sentimental value,' he'd insisted, though she suspected he just enjoyed the irony of wearing it to their most formal dinner parties. The costume's glass eyes watched her now, seeming to mock her paralysis.

Maya had always prided herself on being the practical one. She managed their finances. She remembered birthdays. She took her vitamins, even the ones that made her nauseous. She'd built this life with Liam through careful, methodical choices. And now he was leaving because he needed to 'find himself'?

The papaya's skin gave under her thumb. She thought about texting him back, about begging or raging or simply asking why. Instead, she lifted the fruit, carried it to the kitchen, and cut it open. The flesh inside was perfectly ripe, sweet and unfamiliar.

She took a bite.

The juice ran down her chin. She let it. For the first time in years, nobody was watching to tell her she was making a mess.
