Fruit of the Dead

The papaya sat between us on the hotel room desk, its orange flesh already browning at the edges. Three days ago, at the market, it had seemed like a promise β€” tropical sweetness, fresh starts. Now it looked like everything else in our marriage: something we'd let rot while waiting for the perfect moment.

Mara scrolled through her iPhone, face illuminated by that familiar ghostly blue light. She'd been doing this for hours. Days. Maybe years. I watched her thumb slide across the glass, the same repetitive motion, over and over, like she was trying to polish a stone down to nothing.

"You're not here," I said. My voice sounded flat, even to me.

"I'm working, David." She didn't look up. "This merger isβ€”"

"A zombie." The word came out harder than I intended. "That's what we are. Walking dead. Going through motions while something inside us keeps rotting."

She finally looked at me. Her eyes were tired, the way they'd been tired for months. Maybe years. "That's not fair."

"Is it not?" I gestured at the papaya, at her phone, at the rain streaking the window. "When was the last time you felt something? Actually felt it?"

Outside, lightning fractured the sky β€” a violent, beautiful crack that shook the floorboards. For a second, everything was illuminated: the papaya's weeping flesh, the lines around Mara's eyes, the wedding photo on the nightstand, faces we no longer recognized.

"David," she whispered. And there it was β€” something real in her voice. Fear, maybe. Grief, definitely.

"We can eat it anyway," I said, nodding toward the fruit. "Even when it's gone bad, some parts are still sweet."

She set down the iPhone. The room felt suddenly smaller, like we were two survivors in a bunker, like the world outside had ended while we were busy scrolling through messages that didn't matter. She reached across the desk, her fingers brushing mine. The lightning flashed again. The papaya sat between us, imperfect, decaying, and somehow β€” impossibly β€” still alive.
