Fruit of Deception

spylightningpapaya

The papaya sat on Elena's desk, its orange flesh glistening under fluorescent lights. She sliced it with surgical precision, the same precision she'd used for three years infiltrating Novus Corp as their senior archivist. No one suspects the woman who organizes their darkest secrets.

Marcus from Accounting walked past, pausing at her cubicle. 'That looks... exotic.' His eyes held something beyond professional curiosity.

'My mother sent them from Hawaii,' Elena lied smoothly. 'Want to try?' She offered him a slice, their fingers brushing—lightning, sudden and electric, jolting through her carefully constructed armor.

He took the fruit, then her to dinner. Then her to bed. Each encounter felt like betrayal, yet she couldn't stop. Marcus wasn't just a mark anymore. He was the first person to see her since before her life became a series of coded transmissions and dead drops.

The storm broke on their fourth date. Lightning illuminated his apartment as he confessed: 'I know what you are.'

Elena's hand went to her heel, where a knife waited.

'Corporate spy,' he continued, not accusing but curious. 'I've been watching you watch us for months.' He paused. 'I'm FBI, Elena. We're building a case against Novus for money laundering. Your file was crossed on my desk three weeks ago.'

The room swam. 'You're using me.'

'I was. Then I wasn't.' His voice cracked. 'That night with the papaya—that was real.' Thunder rattled the windows.

She dressed in silence, her cover blown but something else breaking open inside. At the door, she turned. 'The encryption key changes Friday at midnight. Don't miss it.'

The papaya slice on his bedside table had turned brown and soft by morning. Some truths, Elena learned, ripen into sweetness while others rot before you can taste them.
