Fruit of Deception

The papaya sat on Maya's desk like an accusation, its orange flesh glistening through the plastic wrap. Three weeks ago, it would've been a simple breakfast gift from James, the senior analyst whose office was two doors down. Now it was evidence. Maya slipped her company-issued iPhone from her pocket, thumb hovering over the recording app.

She'd been the spy for six months, hired by a competitor to extract trade secrets. James had been her source, her lover, her unwitting accomplice. He'd thought they were building something real between the late nights at the office and the weekends at his apartment. He'd thought the papaya he brought her every morning was just because she'd mentioned once how much she missed the fresh fruit from her childhood in Miami.

The text message on her iPhone screen blinked: *Package received. Payment wired. End contract.*

Maya's fingers trembled. The papaya's sweet scent filled her cubicle, cloying and heavy. James had told her yesterday that he was leaving his wife. He'd said he wanted to build a future with her, something real beyond the stolen moments and confidential documents they'd shared. He'd looked at her with those earnest brown eyes, and for the first time in three years of corporate espionage, Maya had considered choosing the person over the payout.

Now the papaya sat between her phone and the moral reckoning she'd been avoiding. James walked past her desk, offering that soft, secret smile they'd shared in copy rooms and hotel bars. Maya's iPhone buzzed again—her handler demanding confirmation of James's termination from the company.

She thought about how easily trust could be harvested, how completely she'd convinced herself that this time was different, that she wasn't just another spy using another target. The papaya's sweetness had masked the rot underneath.

Maya stood up, the iPhone still burning in her hand, and walked toward James's office. Some betrayals, she decided, deserved to be delivered face to face.
