Fruit & Forgotten Wires

The papaya sat on the counter, its skin freckled with brown like age spots on the back of her hands. Elena had bought it three days ago, back when she still thought they'd eat it together. Now Marcus was gone, and the fruit was softening into something unrecognizable.

Her iPhone lit up with another text from him—something about the cable company, about the internet bill in his name. She watched the screen brighten then dim, like a pulse slowing down. They'd shared everything: Netflix passwords, a dog named Buster who now followed her from room to room with confused eyes, even a joint checking account that would need untangling.

Outside, lightning cracked the sky open. The storm had been building for hours, the air thick and electric, much like the atmosphere in their apartment before he packed his bags. She remembered the way he'd looked at her when he said, "I think we've outgrown this," as if their marriage were a sweater grown too tight.

Buster whined at the thunder. Elena knelt to bury her fingers in his golden fur, absorbing his desperate, uncomplicated need. At least someone still needed her presence.

The papaya had to go. She sliced it open, the flesh now too soft, fermented at the edges. Sweet decay. It reminded her of how love doesn't always end cleanly—sometimes it rots from the inside out while you're still making grocery lists and planning weekend trips.

She threw the fruit away, then found Marcus's old charging cable behind the sofa. Another thing he'd forgotten. Elena considered calling him, telling him to come get his things, but the words dissolved on her tongue like sugar in rain.

The lightning flashed again, illuminating the empty side of the bed. Buster jumped up, curling into the space where Marcus used to sleep. Together, they waited for the storm to pass.
