Frizzy Courage

hairpapayabull

Maya's hair had a personality of its own — a massive, frizzy halo that refused to be tamed by brushes, gel, or the $45 straightening iron her mom bought as a "last resort." At fifteen, Maya had learned that the halo was here to stay, just like her spot in the school hierarchy: comfortably invisible, thank you very much.

Until the day her abuela visited with a papaya.

"You try, mija. It's good for growing girls." Abuela placed the alien-looking fruit on the kitchen counter like it was normal breakfast fare.

Maya poked at it. "It looks like... inside-out melon?"

"Just try." Her mom gave her The Look. The one that said, your grandmother came all this way, humor her.

So Maya tried. And okay, actually kind of loved it — sweet and weirdly buttery, like dessert for breakfast. She even posted about it (private story, obviously): "papaya adventures with abuela 💕"

Then her phone blew up.

Brooklyn, aka The Queen of Everything, reposted it to her public story with: "Omg Maya is so cultural now 😂"

The comments rolled in. Someone added crying-laughing emojis. Another wrote: "when did you get so exotic lol"

Maya's face burned. Her hair suddenly felt too big, too much. She reached for her phone to delete everything —

"MAYA!" Her brother burst in. "You need to see this. There's a REAL BULL loose in the neighborhood!"

"What?"

"From that farm down the road! It's chillin' in Mr. Henderson's garden!"

Maya grabbed her shoes and ran outside, because what else do you do when there's a bull in your suburban subdivision? A crowd had already gathered. Phones out. Someone livestreaming.

And there it was: an actual bull, looking ridiculously calm, munching on Mr. Henderson's prize pumpkins like it owned the place.

"That's kinda majestic," someone whispered.

Maya stood tall, her frizzy halo catching the wind. The bull lifted its massive head and stared right at her. Something shifted in her chest.

She pulled out her phone and posted to her public story: "bull in my yard vs my hair vs my dignity. who wins? (spoiler: definitely not the dignity)"

Her phone lit up immediately. Brooklyn: "NO WAY!!" Three classmates: "TAKE US TO IT"

The bull snorted, turned, and lumbered away.

Maya's hair frizzed bigger than ever. She grinned. The halo could stay.
