Frizzy and Free
Maya's hair defied gravity, physics, and possibly several state laws. She'd spent two hours with the straightening iron, coaxing her natural curls into submission for Jordan's party tonight. Her first real party. The one where everyone who mattered would be there.
"You look like a terrified poodle," her reflection whispered. Maya sighed, reaching for the expensive hair gel her mom swore by.
That's when Mittens, their family's demonic orange cat, decided this was the perfect moment to launch his nightly assault on the bathroom counter. In one fluid motion, he knocked over Maya's water glass—straight onto her carefully straightened hair.
"NO!" Maya yelled as Mittens bolted like a liquid orange lightning bolt. "You furry little—"
She stared at her reflection in horror. The water had activated every single curl she'd spent hours suppressing. Her hair puffed outward like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket. Great. Absolutely perfect. Jordan was going to take one look at her and think she'd rolled out of bed and decided to show up anyway.
Her phone buzzed. Jordan: "hey! u still coming? everyone's asking about u 😊"
Maya's chest tightened. She could stay home. She could pretend she got sick. She could spend another three hours fixing her hair and still end up looking like she was trying too hard.
Or she could show up looking like herself.
"Fine," she said to her reflection, to Mittens (currently watching from the doorway with innocent eyes), to the universe. "Fine."
She threw on her favorite oversized hoodie—the one her ex-best friend said made her look like a "middle schooler who just discovered Hot Topic." She didn't straighten her hair again. She didn't even try to tame the frizz.
When she walked into Jordan's basement ten minutes later, heart pounding so hard she thought it might actually burst, nobody laughed. Nobody pointed. In fact, Leah—the girl Maya had been secretly terrified of for three years—grinned and said, "Dude, your hair is SO much better curly. I've been trying to get mine to do that for, like, ever."
Maya spent the rest of the night showing Leah how to scrunch her curls properly while Mittens probably plotted his next bathroom attack at home. Sometimes the worst disasters are actually just plot twists you didn't see coming.
