Frizz, Felines, and Fearless Fridays
Maya's hair had decided to declare war. Again. She stood in front of her mirror, frizzy curls defying gravity, product, and hope alike. The #curlyhairproblems hashtag had never felt more real.
"You're not seriously stressing about that?" Her best friend Chen appeared on FaceTime, looking effortlessly perfect. "It's just the Fall Bash, Maya. Not the MET Gala."
"Easy for you to say," Maya groaned, spraying more curl cream. "Josh will be there. I can't show up looking like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket."
Her cat, Moonpie, chose that moment to leap onto her desk and knock over her entire bottle of expensive hair oil. The cat sat there, tail twitching, like she'd accomplished something magnificent.
"Mood," Maya sighed.
The gymnasium was already vibrating when they arrived.Decorations swayed, bass thumped, and the smell of cheap cologne mixed with nervous energy. Then she saw him—Josh, standing near the punch bowl with that smile that made her forget how to form complete sentences.
Maya started to panic. Her frizz was definitely frizzing. Her heart was doing gymnastics. And then, she noticed something worse. Tyler, the biggest bully at Northwood High, was cornering a freshman, pointing and laughing while the kid looked like he wanted to vanish into thin air.
Something in Maya snapped. All that anxiety about Josh and hair and fitting together suddenly felt stupid. This was real.
She marched over, Moonpie's fearless attitude suddenly making perfect sense. "Hey, Tyler. Maybe pick on someone your own size? Or is that too challenging for you?"
The gym went quiet. Tyler blinked, clearly confused. This wasn't supposed to happen—nobody stood up to him. Especially not quiet Maya with her chaotic curls.
"Whatever," he muttered, backing down. The freshman mouthed "thank you" as Maya walked away, her heart racing for a completely different reason now.
Josh appeared beside her, grinning. "That was honestly the most badass thing I've ever seen."
Maya touched one of her wild curls. "My hair's a mess, isn't it?"
"Nah," Josh said. "It looks perfect."
