Friday Night Undead

Maya's vintage dad hat wouldn't stop sliding over her eyes as she crept through the darkened hallway, phone flashlight cutting through shadows. Behind her, Sasha whispered they were acting like total zombies, which was rich considering they'd spent six hours binge-watching The Walking Dead the night before.

The abandoned arcade was Sasha's idea, of course. Because nothing says 'I'm totally over my ex' like breaking into a place you technically aren't supposed to enter. Maya's palm was sweating against the cold metal door handle when lightning flashed, illuminating the arcade's interior in ghostly blue-white.

And that's when she saw it.

A massive prop bear from the old claw game, missing one ear and half its stuffing, glowing in the sudden electric brilliance. Sasha grabbed her arm, fingernails digging in. 'Okay, that's literally cursed energy.'

Maya almost bailed right then. But then she remembered how Jake had humiliated her at lunch, how everyone had watched, how she'd spent the entire weekend scrolling through his Instagram while her GPA tanked and her friendships frayed. Sometimes you need to break into an abandoned arcade at midnight. Sometimes you need to face the zombie-bear of your emotional damage head-on.

'It's just polyester and bad decisions,' she said, stepping forward. 'Let's take it.'

They carried that ragged bear three miles in the rain, Sasha's vintage hat completely ruined, both of them laughing so hard they couldn't breathe. The bear—'Barry,' obviously—ended up in Maya's room, a weird trophy from the night she finally stopped being a zombie in her own life.

Next Monday, Jake tried to sit at their lunch table. Maya adjusted her hat, smiled, and said, 'Sorry, this seat's saved for someone who doesn't emotionally bankrupt his friends.' Sasha snorted into her juice box.

Sometimes growing up means finding your weird. Sometimes it means stealing a haunted stuffed bear with your best friend during a thunderstorm. Mostly, it's about realizing you don't have to be undead anymore—you can just be beautifully, chaotically alive.
