Friday Night Pyramid Scheme
Maya dragged herself through the school hallway, feeling like a total zombie after pulling an all-nighter to finish her history paper. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, making her headache thump in time with her steps. "You look rough," said Jordan, falling into step beside her. "Rough doesn't even cover it." Maya yawned. "I'm running on caffeine and regret."
Jordan's eyes lit up with that familiar chaotic energy. "Perfect timing! Liam's cat went full ninja last night and knocked over his mom's vintage pyramid collection—don't ask—and he's spiraling. We need to execute Operation Cover-Up before his parents get back from their anniversary dinner."
Maya groaned. "A pyramid collection? Seriously?"
"It's weirdly specific, I know. But here's the bear we're gonna have to carry—Liam's mom is SUPER particular about her ancient Egypt obsession. She'll literally ground him until college."
"Fine," Maya sighed, checking her phone. "But if I pass out in glue, you're explaining it to my mom."
They met up with Liam in his garage, where the shattered remains of three pyramids lay scattered across his workbench. His cat, Bast, sat on a nearby shelf looking suspiciously innocent. "I tried to fix it," Liam whispered, "but I think I made it worse. His hands were shaking. "Some friend I am, breaking their stuff and then being too scared to confess."
Maya studied the pieces for a moment. "You know what? We don't have to fix it perfectly. We just have to make it look intentional."
"What?" Jordan and Liam said in unison.
"Think about it. We glue the pieces back together, but we lean into the cracks. Make it look like we upcycled it into something artsy. Your mom loves her antique aesthetic, right? What if this is her new centerpiece? An 'ancient artifact with modern restoration' or whatever?"
Liam's panic slowly transformed into hope. "That... actually might work? She's always talking about wabi-sabi and finding beauty in imperfection."
"Exactly," Maya said, already sorting the shards. "Jordan, grab the superglue. Liam, find that gold paint you used for your science project. We've got two hours to turn this disaster into art."
They worked frantically, their friendship forged deeper in the chaos of glue fumes and whispered panic. When Liam's parents returned, they found three reconstructed pyramids covered in delicate gold veins where the cracks had been—strange, but strikingly beautiful.
His mom actually gasped. "Liam, did you DO this?"
Liam glanced at Maya and Jordan, a tiny smile breaking through his terror. "Yeah. I, uh, wanted to make them even more special. For you."
Later that night, curled up in Maya's bedroom with disaster Netflix playing in the background, Jordan nudged her. "You know, you're basically a genius. That could've been so bad."
Maya laughed, finally feeling some of the zombie fog lift. "Nah. We just make a good team. Even when we're operating on zero sleep and pure panic."
