Friday Night Padel Apocalypse

Maya felt like a literal zombie. Three hours of sleep after binge-watching until 3 AM would do that to you. But here she was, 15 years old, standing at the entrance of the new Padel Club, wearing her sister's oversized baseball cap because she'd chickened out of her natural curls at the last second.

"You coming in or what?" Chloe's voice cut through her spiral. Her best friend stood by the glass courts, already eyeing a group of guys from school.

Maya adjusted the hat brim lower. "I'm literally decomposing. This was a mistake."

"No backsies." Chloe grabbed her arm. "Besides, Tyler's here."

Tyler. The guy she'd been lowkey obsessed with since September. The one who always wore that fox beanie, even in 80 degree weather. The one who somehow made AP Calculus look effortless while Maya was barely surviving Algebra II.

And suddenly, there he was. Fox beanie. Dimples. Holding a padel racket like he belonged on a Nike poster.

"Hey!" He waved. "You playing?"

"Uh, yeah?" Maya's voice came out squeaky. "I mean, yeah, definitely. Padel is my whole personality."

The lie was so smooth it almost convinced herself.

"Cool." He grinned. "We need a fourth. You wanna sub in?"

Her first hit went straight into the net. Her second ricocheted off the back wall and nearly took out a water bottle.

"You good?" Chloe hissed from across the court.

Maya nodded, wiping sweat from her forehead. Her hat was soaked. Her hair was definitely frizzing. She was probably hallucinating the entire thing.

Then it happened—Tyler moved to return a serve, and his fox beanie slipped off. Wild ginger hair exploded everywhere, like he'd been electrocuted.

He caught it, laughing. "My secret identity. I'm actually part ginger, part gremlin."

"Your hair is amazing," Maya blurted, before her brain could filter it.

The court went quiet. Tyler's ears turned pink.

"Thanks?" He rubbed his neck. "I mean, yours too. Under the hat. I mean, not that I'm looking at your hair, I just—" His rambling cut off as someone served.

An hour later, Maya collapsed on a bench, her legs trembling. She'd actually played. Not well—she'd missed at least half the returns—but she'd played.

Zombie mode officially deactivated.

"Hey." Tyler appeared, water bottle in hand. "You're actually pretty good. For someone who claimed padel was their 'whole personality' an hour ago."

Maya groaned. "You heard that?"

"Everyone heard that." He sat beside her, their knees almost touching. "It was cute."

Cute. The word bounced around her head like a ping pong ball.

"Same time next week?" He asked, casual like he didn't just make her entire year.

"Yeah." Maya found herself grinning. "Same time next week."

As she walked home with Chloe, baseball cap pulled low and padel racket clanking against her backpack, Maya realized something: sometimes the best moments happened when you were too exhausted to overthink them.

And maybe, just maybe, being a zombie was the perfect way to start feeling alive again.
