Friday Night Lights Out

Maya dragged herself through the school hallway feeling like a complete zombie. Three hours of sleep after finishing her AP History project would do that to you. She caught her reflection in the bathroom mirror – dark circles under her eyes, hair attempting a desperate escape from her ponytail. The final pep rally before homecoming loomed ahead, and she was supposed to be cheering.

"You look like you've been fighting a bear," her best friend Chloe said, meeting her at Maya's locker. "Here." She pressed an orange into Maya's hand. "Vitamin C. My mom's cure for everything."

Maya peeled it slowly, the citrus scent cutting through the foggy headache. The bell rang, signaling the start of fourth period. Mr. Harrison's biology class.

She shuffled in, slumping into her usual seat near the back. Tyler, the guy she'd been crushing on since September, caught her eye and smirked. "Nice hair, Maya."

Her face burned. He was teasing her, obviously. But still.

"Alright everyone," Mr. Harrison announced, "pop quiz on cellular respiration." A collective groan rippled through the room.

"That's such bull," someone muttered beside her. It was Jake, Tyler's best friend, leaning back with that lazy confidence he always wore like a second skin.

"Excuse me?" Mr. Harrison raised an eyebrow.

"I meant... bulls charge at red, sir. And cellular respiration is... intense?" Jake tried. The class laughed.

Maya actually snorted. Maybe it was the exhaustion, or the fact that Jake's terrible lie was somehow endearing.

The rally was chaos – streamers, terrible music, and the football team getting introduced like they were gods. Tyler stood at the front of the line, looking perfect and annoying. Jake was there too, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else.

They made eye contact across the gym. He mouthed: "still alive?"

She smiled despite herself.

Later, at Chloe's house for the pre-game party, Maya found herself on the back porch, escaping the noise. Jake appeared with two sodas.

"You know," he said, leaning against the railing, "being a zombie isn't a bad thing sometimes. Zombies don't care what people think. They just... are."

"That's the weirdest attempt at making me feel better," she said, but she was smiling.

"I'm working on it." He grinned. "So, about that biology quiz... want to study together sometime? I mean, if you're not too busy, you know, being terrifying and bear-like."

She laughed. "Smooth, Jake. Real smooth."

But as she took the soda, their fingers brushing for just a second longer than necessary, Maya thought maybe, just maybe, feeling like a zombie wasn't so bad if it led to moments like this. Her week might have been a disaster, but Friday night? Friday night was just getting started.
