Freshman Curveball

Maya's first day at Westbridge High felt like walking onto a field where everyone else already knew the plays. The cafeteria alone was a battlefield — cliques staking out territories like competitive sports teams. She stood clutching her tray, heart hammering, when she spotted Jordan from homeroom waving at a table near the windows.

His friends were talking baseball. Something about the varsity team's losing streak and how Coach was making them run laps until someone could actually hit a curveball. Maya nodded like she understood, even though sports weren't exactly her thing. She was more of an observer, always watching from the sidelines.

Then her phone buzzed. Her older sister had texted: 'Don't forget your vitamin D supplements! Mom's orders.' Maya groaned internally. Nothing killed cool points faster than your sister airing your family's health habits over group chat. She quickly tapped her screen to dismiss it, but not before Jordan's friend Liam noticed.

'Vitamin D, huh?' Liam grinned. 'What are you, like, a health influencer now?'

The table went quiet. This was it — the moment that determined whether Maya became 'the vitamin girl' or actually made friends. Her face burned. But then she remembered something her mom always said: sometimes you have to work with what you've got.

'Man,' Maya said, leaning back in her chair, 'you know what I'd kill for right now? Like, actually commit murder for? An orange papaya smoothie from that place downtown. The one that puts actual vitamins in their stuff instead of just sugar water.'

Jordan perked up. 'Wait, that place by the batting cages? Their stuff is actually legit.'

'My teammate's girlfriend works there,' another kid added. 'She says she can get us discounts.'

And just like that, Maya was in. Not as the vitamin girl or the new kid, but as someone who knew about the good smoothie spot. Later that afternoon, she found herself at the batting cages with Jordan and his friends, watching them swing at baseballs and laughing when Liam got absolutely owned by the pitching machine. Her iphone camera captured Jordan's ridiculous batting stance — a moment that would become their group's inside joke for months.

That night, Maya faceted her sister. 'You're actually the worst,' she said, 'but also kinda the best.'

'I'll take it,' her sister replied. 'So how was your first day?'

Maya smiled, thinking about how sometimes the most embarrassing moments could turn into something genuine. 'I survived,' she said. 'And I think I might actually like it here.'
