Fractured Sky

Maya's hair had a mind of its own. Ever since she'd chopped it into a jagged pixie cut last week—partially inspired by that TikTok trend, partially because she'd lost a bet to her brother—it seemed determined to make her look like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket every morning. Which was ironic, considering what happened next.

The storm outside Mr. Henderson's English classroom was getting intense. Rain lashed against the windows in horizontal sheets, and every few seconds, the sky would crack open with lightning that turned the room into a strobe-lit nightmare. Maya kept checking her iphone under her desk, refreshing the group chat where her friends were losing their minds over the dance tonight.

"u coming??" Jenna had texted three times.

Maya's thumb hovered over the keyboard. She wanted to go—honestly—but she also didn't want to spend three hours pretending to care about slow dances and spiked punch while her ex-boyfriend made eyes at Sophia across the gym. Plus, her hair was doing that thing where one side stuck up like a confused cat ear.

A massive bolt of lightning struck somewhere nearby, and the classroom lights flickered ominously.

"Everyone stay calm," Mr. Henderson said, sounding exactly like someone who was not staying calm. "Just a little weather—"

CRACK. The lights died. Someone screamed. Then: laughter. Maya couldn't help it—something about the situation's absurdity broke her composure. She wasn't the only one. Soon the whole class was giggling in the dark, their phone screens creating a galaxy of tiny blue constellations across the room.

Her iphone buzzed. "dance is cancelled anyway. power's out at school. come over?"

Maya stared at the message, then at her reflection in the darkened window. Her hair was still ridiculous. The night was not going according to plan. But sometimes, she realized, the plans that fell apart were the ones that made the best stories.

"be there in 10," she typed back.

The storm kept raging, but somehow Maya didn't mind. Some things were worth getting a little messy for.
