Foxfire & Zombie State

Maya felt like a zombie. The third week of junior year had turned her into something that walked through school hallways and sat through AP Chem, but barely registered as alive. Her phone screen glowed with another unread text from Alex—probably canceling plans again. Whatever.

She ditched her usual bus route to walk home through the patch of woods behind the school. The orange and gold leaves crunched under her combat boots, the first sign that fall had actually arrived. Her phone buzzed with a snapchat notification: some party at Tyler's house tonight. Everyone would be there. Everyone expected her to be there.

The woods near the creek were her secret spot—the one place she didn't have to perform. She sat on her favorite fallen log and scrolled past photos of people she barely knew acting like they were all best friends forever. Same faces, same fake smiles, same everything.

Then she saw it.

A fox. Not the cute, Instagram-filter kind, but the real deal—rusty red fur, ears alert, watching her with intelligent eyes. It moved with this effortless grace, totally unbothered, completely itself. No pretending, no performance.

The fox looked right at her, like it knew something she didn't.

"You're just vibing, huh?" she whispered. The fox's tail flicked, almost like acknowledgment.

Suddenly her phone buzzed again. Another group chat blowing up about tonight's party, another thing she was supposed to care about. She looked at the screen, then at the fox still watching her, then at the orange light filtering through the autumn leaves.

Something clicked. The zombie feeling lifted, just a little.

She texted Alex: "Actually, I think I'm gonna skip tonight. Wanna just hang tomorrow instead?"

The fox vanished into the undergrowth, silent as a secret. Maya sat there for twenty more minutes, just breathing, just existing, before heading home. For the first time in weeks, she actually felt real.
