Foxes at the Padel Court

Maya's new school uniform felt scratchy against her skin, but not as scratchy as the way everyone looked at her like she was an alien species. Two weeks in and her only real friend was Barnaby, her fat orange cat who didn't care that she hadn't been invited to a single party.

Then came the text that changed everything: "Padel after school? Some of us are going 😊" from Sophie, whose Instagram showed her living literally the perfect life.

Maya's thumbs shook as she typed "YES!!" on her iPhone, adding way too many emojis. She'd never played padel in her life – it was like tennis but cooler, apparently. The sport of the popular crowd.

The court smelled like expensive perfume and competition. Maya's racket felt alien in her hands, but she swung with desperate enthusiasm. Until she saw HIM.

The fox.

Not a metaphorical fox – an actual, sleek red fox padding along the fence line behind the court, watching them with intelligent amber eyes. Like he was judging their serves and backhands.

"Whoa, check it out," Liam whispered, and suddenly everyone was looking at the fox, then at Maya, who'd stopped mid-swing to stare back.

"He's so foxy," someone giggled.

"Like, actually a fox though," Maya said without thinking, and the group exploded into laughter. Not mean laughter – real laughter. Sophie handed her a water bottle. "You're hilarious, Maya."

The fox blinked slowly, then trotted away like he'd accomplished his mission. And just like that, Maya wasn't the new girl anymore. She was the girl who almost hit a ball at a fox during her first padel game.

Later that night, Barnaby circled her ankles as she scrolled through the new group chat: "Fox Squad 💅" Sophie had named it. Maya fell asleep smiling, her phone battery at 12%, her future looking brighter than she'd dared to hope.
