Fox's Midnight Baseball Game

Lily couldn't sleep. The moonlight spilled across her bedroom floor like silver milk, calling her outside. She crept downstairs and through the back door into her garden.

That's when she saw him — a sleek red fox sitting by the old palm tree, something clutched in his mouth.

"Want to play?" the fox asked. Lily blinked. Foxes couldn't talk!

"I'm Finn," said the fox, dropping a baseball at her feet. "Tonight's the big game."

Lily's heart soared. Baseball was her favorite! She grabbed the ball and followed Finn through a hidden path behind the palm tree. The leaves shimmered with fairy dust.

They emerged into a magical clearing where fireflies danced like tiny stars. Standing there was a enormous bull — but the gentlest bull Lily had ever seen, with kind brown eyes and a flower crown.

"I'm Blossom," the bull said softly. "I'm the umpire. I make sure everyone plays fair."

Lily noticed something moving in the shadows. A zombie staggered forward — green skin, tattered clothes. Lily shrank back.

"Don't be scared," Finn said. "That's Zed. He's not like other zombies. He died protecting this forest from hunters. Now he's our guardian."

Zed smiled crookedly. "Can I play too? I promise not to eat anyone's brains. I just want to feel like part of the team again."

Lily looked at Zed's lonely eyes and felt her fear melt away. "Of course! Everyone deserves to play."

They played the most magical baseball game ever. The palm tree's fronds caught every home run. Zed was surprisingly fast for a zombie, though he did trip over his own feet sometimes. Finn was cunning and quick. Blossom called every fairly, her voice as gentle as summer breeze.

When the game ended, Zed reached into his pocket and pulled out a glowing stone.

"For believing in me," he said. "Come back anytime."

Lily hugged each of her new friends and followed Finn back through the palm tree path. She crawled into bed, the magical stone still glowing on her nightstand.

Some things aren't scary once you give them a chance, Lily thought, drifting off to sleep. And the best friends come from the most unexpected places.
