Fox Orange Summer

Maya stared at the bathroom mirror, the box of fox-orange hair dye mocking her from the counter. Her parents were at a wedding — perfect timing to finally do something reckless for once. Being sixteen felt like waiting in a永远 DM zone, watching everyone else's lives highlight while she stayed on read.

The first section of hair came out fire-orange. Then the next. By the time she finished, her reflection looked like a completely different person. Someone bold. Someone who didn't overthink every text message.

Then her brother walked in.

"What did you DO?" Leo stood frozen, seventeen going on fifty, always the responsible one. Always the bear protecting her from everything, including herself.

"It's just hair, Leo. It'll wash out."

"Mom and Dad are gonna lose it. You know how they are."

But that night, watching their dad rant about "unnatural attention-seeking behavior" and their mom cry about "my baby girl's beautiful brown hair," Maya realized something. She wasn't sorry. Not even a little.

Monday at school, her best friend Priya took one look and gasped. "It's giving main character energy, honestly."

Maya's crush Tyler actually noticed her in AP Chem. "New hair? It's... bold."

"Bold like a fox," she'd shot back, then immediately cringed at her own awkwardness. But Tyler had laughed. Actually laughed.

By Friday, the orange had faded to copper, but something else had shifted. She'd started sitting with different people at lunch. Signed up for debate tryouts. Told her brother he didn't have to worry about her so much.

"You're different," Leo said, watching her apply touch-up dye.

"Maybe." She grinned at him. "Or maybe I'm just done playing it safe."

Her hair wasn't fox-orange anymore, but she was. Clever. adaptable. ready for whatever came next.
