Fox Orange Friday Night

Maya's hair was supposed to be sun-kissed caramel. Instead, she emerged from her bathroom mirror looking like a confused fox. The box had lied. She grabbed her older brother's beanie and yanked it down, hiding the disaster.

"You going to Jordan's party?" her mom called from downstairs.

"Yeah," Maya lied, already feeling like a fraud.

At school, her best friend Chen had been weird all week. Texts left on read. Lunch table avoided. Now Jordan's party loomed like a social minefield, and Maya was about to walk in looking like she'd been attacked by a particularly aggressive hair dye disaster.

"You're wearing a beanie in July?" Jordan asked when she arrived, already red cup in hand. His basement hummed with bass and too many bodies packed into too little space.

"It's my thing now," Maya said, even though sweat was already prickling along her hairline.

She found Chen by the snack table, surrounded by the cool crowd—the ones who had their lives figured out, who knew which colleges they'd grace with their presence, who didn't accidentally dye their hair fox orange.

"Hey," Maya tried, but Chen turned away, laughing at something someone else said.

The air grew thick, water pushing at the corners of Maya's eyes. She bolted up the stairs, out the back door, into the cool night air where she could finally breathe.

"You good?"

Maya jumped. Chen stood there, holding two water bottles.

"I—my hair."

Chen's eyebrows lifted. "Let me see."

"No, it's—"

"Maya. We've been friends since sixth grade. I saw you eat a crayon. Whatever it is, I can handle it."

Maya pulled off the beanie. Her hair was definitely fox orange. Definitely not caramel.

Chen stared. Then burst out laughing.

"Okay, wow. That's... a choice."

"I know," Maya groaned. "I look like a woodland creature that lost a fight."

"Here." Chen handed her a water bottle. "Also, I've been weird because I've been trying to figure out how to tell you something."

"That you're embarrassed to be seen with Fox Girl?"

"No, you idiot." Chen dug in their pocket and pulled out a gummy vitamin shaped like a bear. "I'm moving. To Seattle. My dad got a job offer."

The news hit Maya like a splash of cold water. "When?"

"End of the summer."

They stood there in Jordan's backyard, fireflies blinking around them like tiny stars come down to investigate.

"Fox orange is actually kind of bold," Chen said finally. "It's a vibe."

"A disaster vibe."

"An ambitious disaster." Chen grinned. "That's literally you."

Maya smiled, actually smiled, and realized she wasn't pulling the beanie back on. "Yeah. I guess it is."
