Fox Orange

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers running through her newly-dyed copper hair. The bathroom mirror showed a stranger—someone bold, someone who wouldn't spend seventh period pretending not to notice how Leo's hazel eyes tracked her during lit.

"You look like a fox," her little brother had announced that morning, which was honestly kind of perfect.

At school, whispers trailed her down the hallway. She'd gone from safe beige to this electric orange that screamed I'M HERE, PAY ATTENTION. Her stomach did backflips, but her chin stayed up.

Third period, she caught Leo watching her across the cafeteria. Not just glancing—full-on staring, phone angled like he was documenting evidence. Was he live-tweeting her transformation? Did that mean he cared?

No. He was probably just roasting her new look with his friends.

But by lunch, the text came through: "Your hair looks amazing. Been wanting to tell you forever that you're gorgeous but I'm an idiot. — Leo"

Maya nearly dropped her phone. Her fingers hovered over the screen—what was the right move here? Cool and casual? Enthusiastic but not desperate?

"Thanks :)" she typed back. Immediately wanted to die. Too many emojis.

He sent a fox emoji. Then: "You're like, actually stunning. The hair just makes it impossible to look away."

Her face burned hotter than her hair dye job.

Later, against her locker, Leo's breath ghosted over her cheek. "I've been basically spying on you all week trying to figure out how to say this without being weird."

Maya laughed, and her fox-orange hair caught the light, and suddenly she was someone who got the guy. Someone who took risks. Someone who didn't hide in beige.

"Well," she said, "good thing I made it easy for you."

His fingers brushed her new copper strands. "You definitely did that."
