Fox on the Padel Court
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, sporting bright orange hair dye that her mom definitely wouldn't approve of. First period Spanish, and she was already questioning every life choice that led here.
"Nice orange, Fox," whispered Jake, the sophomore who'd somehow earned the nickname for his sly grin and way of sliding through social situations untouched. Maya hated how her stomach did that annoying flutter thing whenever he talked to her.
"Shut up," she muttered, but not with any real heat.
By lunch, Maya's anxiety levels reached peak disaster when she discovered—too late—that she had spinach stuck in her teeth from her supposedly healthy smoothie. Three hours. She'd walked through the hallways with green stuff in her smile for three hours.
"You've got a little..." Jake gestured at his own teeth, looking almost sympathetic. Almost.
Maya's face burned hotter than her questionable hair choice. "Thanks for the heads-up, Fox. Really."
After school, she found herself at the community center watching Jake play padel with his friends. The sport was like tennis meets squash, and Jake moved with this easy confidence Maya wished she possessed. He spotted her and waved her over.
"Wanna try?"
"I'll embarrass myself."
"So? Everyone embarrasses themselves. It's called being sixteen."
He tossed her a racquet. Maya's first swing missed completely. Second swing hit the fence. But by the fourth attempt, she actually made contact. Jake cheered like she'd won Olympic gold.
"See? You're a natural, Fox."
"Don't call me that."
"Why not? It suits you. Orange hair, wild spirit, sneaky smile..."
Maya rolled her eyes but couldn't help grinning. The spinach incident still haunted her, and her hair would probably get her grounded until graduation, but somehow, standing on the padel court with Jake treating her like she belonged here, none of it mattered so much.
Maybe being a Fox wasn't so bad after all.
