Fox Mode, Cat Phase
Maya's phone buzzed at 2 AM. Again.
Her feed was a battlefield, and she was losing. The new kid, Jayden (hot, mysterious, total fox), had posted a story exactly three minutes ago. Maya, currently bed-headed and wearing dinosaur pajamas, was not about to let this opportunity slide.
"Operation: Don't Be Creepy" commenced.
She tapped through. Jayden at some party. Jayden with friends. Jayden holding—
Wait. Was that... a cat?
Maya bolted upright, knocking her vitamin supplements off the nightstand. The clatter echoed through her silent room. Her actual cat, Biscuit, lifted her head from the foot of the bed, judgment in those yellow eyes.
"You're not helping," Maya whispered.
Biscuit had been her emotional support animal since the Great Crush Disaster of sophomore year, when Maya had accidentally liked a photo from 2017 while deep-stalking her then-crush. The humiliation still haunted her.
Now here she was, about to do it again. Because Jayden, with his perfect jawline and brooding aesthetic, had posted a cat. And Maya, certified cat whisperer and professional overthinker, needed to know everything.
Her fingers hovered over the DM button. Then her brain activated.
*What if this is it?* she thought. *What if this cat is my in?*
She began her reconnaissance. That was Jayden's backyard. That fence looked familiar—too familiar. Maya grabbed her shoes, threw on a hoodie, and climbed out her window.
Because teenage girls are logical like that.
The night air hit her as she tiptoed through her neighbors' yards. Two houses down, she found the fence from the photo. A cat sat on top of it—not Jayden's cat, but something orange and sleek.
A fox.
Maya froze. The fox stared at her, unimpressed.
"What are you looking at?" she whispered. "I'm not spying. I'm... investigating. For science."
The fox yawned and trotted away.
Maya's phone buzzed again. A notification: @jayden_ started following you.
She nearly dropped her phone.
When she finally crawled back through her window at 3 AM, adrenaline crashing, Biscuit was still awake. Maya collapsed onto her bed, heart racing, not from the covert mission but from the simple notification that changed everything.
"You know what?" she told the cat. "Being a spy is overrated."
Biscuit purred, as if to say, *Finally, you're learning.*
Maya smiled into her pillow. Sometimes the best operations are the ones you don't plan at all.
