Fox Mode Activated

Maya dragged herself into Jordan's house feeling like absolute zombie material. Finals week had basically turned her brain into mush, and she'd spent the last forty-eight hours running on caffeine and panic. But when Tyler—actual Tyler, who she'd been lowkey obsessed with since September—invited her to the end-of-year hangout, she'd obviously said yes. Even if she was currently functioning on approximately three hours of sleep.

The backyard was already buzzing with people. Someone had turned on fairy lights that draped across the deck, and the smell of something grilled drifted through the air. Maya's stomach did that nervous little flip it always did when she stepped into a room full of people who seemed to naturally know what to do with their hands.

"Hey! You made it!" Tyler appeared with that easy grin that made her forget how to form sentences. He was wearing that vintage band tee she'd mentioned liking once, which she was absolutely not reading too much into.

"Yeah, sorry I'm late," she managed. "I was dying my hair and lost track of time." A total lie. She'd been psyching herself up in front of the mirror for forty-five minutes.

"No worries, you're perfect timing. We're about to do the fruit challenge thing." He gestured to a table where someone had arranged the most random assortment of fruits. "My cousin went to this specialty market and went a little crazy."

Maya's eyes landed immediately on the papaya sitting there like it was confused about its life choices. She'd never actually had one, but she'd seen enough TikTok food reviews to know they were either delicious or "tastes like feet" depending on who you asked.

"What's the challenge?" she asked, trying to sound chill instead of terrified.

"Everyone has to try something they've never had before. No backing out." He raised an eyebrow playfully. "Unless you're scared."

Something in Maya shifted. The anxiety that had been buzzing under her skin suddenly crystallized into something sharper. She could feel her inner fox wake up—that part of her that got sly and resourceful when backed into a corner. Fox mode activated, as her little sister would say.

"Please," she scoffed, reaching for the papaya slice like it was no big deal. "I've been eating weird stuff my whole life. This is nothing."

She took a bite, expecting the worst, and—okay, actually? It wasn't bad. Kind of like melon but more interesting, with this subtle peppery kick she hadn't expected.

"Not bad," she said, and Tyler's face lit up like she'd just passed some unspoken test.

"See? I knew you'd be cool about it."

The rest of the night blurred into something golden and easy—sitting on the grass with people who were slowly becoming friends, watching the stars come out while someone's playlist bumped quietly in the background. At some point, Tyler ended up beside her, close enough that their elbows touched.

"You know," he said, "I was kinda hoping you'd show up today."

Maya's heart did this thing where it forgot how to rhythm properly. "Yeah?"

"Yeah. You seem different than the people who just go along with everything. Like you actually think about stuff."

She thought about the papaya, about how she could've easily said no and played it safe, about how fox mode had kicked in and pushed her to be brave. Sometimes the scariest things turned out to be the most worth it.

"Maybe," she said, feeling something genuine and warm blooming in her chest. "But mostly I'm just really tired and will apparently eat anything on a dare."

Tyler laughed, and Maya smiled into the darkness, feeling entirely awake for the first time all week.
