Fox Mode Activated

The pool party was everything Maya dreaded. Humid bass thumping from expensive speakers, chlorine-slicked bodies everywhere, and her crush—actual dream girl Elena—standing by the snack table looking like a summer goddess.

Maya's best friend since kindergarten, Jasmine, was already three bottles in. "You need fox mode, Maya. Like, actual energy."

"Fox mode isn't a thing, Jas."

"It is now. Channel your inner fox. Slinky. Mysterious. Impossible to catch."

Maya adjusted her swimsuit. Her iPhone buzzed in her bag—her mom sending grocery memes again—but she ignored it. Fox mode meant not checking notifications like a loser.

Then she saw Elena pick up a papaya wedge from the fruit platter and just... take a bite. Like it was an apple. Juice dripping down her chin like something from a movie.

Maya's brain short-circuited.

"You staring at Elena again?" Jasmine whispered. "Just go talk to her. Ask her about the papaya. It's literally perfect conversation bait."

"What would I even say? 'Nice papaya technique'?"

"YES! That's hilarious! She'll think you're funny!"

Maya shook her head. She wasn't funny. She was the girl who accidentally liked three-year-old posts while Instagram stalking.

Then something orange flashed near the fence line.

A cat. An actual orange tabby, sitting on the other side of the pool gate, staring at Elena's papaya with intense hunger.

"Is that someone's cat?" Elena called out, noticing too.

Before Maya could stop herself, she was opening the gate. The cat didn't run. It walked right up to her and started rubbing against her legs like they'd known each other for years.

"Oh my god, it's the neighborhood fox," some guy said. "We call it that because it's sneaky as hell. Always stealing food from parties."

"That's literally a cat," Maya said, scratching behind its ears.

"Fox cat," Elena corrected, walking over. "Hey little fox-cat. You want papaya?"

She held out the fruit. The cat—fox-cat—sniffed it delicately, then ate it from her hand.

"Dude," Jasmine said from behind them. "That was fox mode. You just went over there and did it."

Maya looked at Elena, who was smiling like she'd just witnessed magic.

"Your cat has excellent taste," Elena said. "Papaya is underrated."

"It's not my—" Maya started, then stopped. "Yeah. My fox cat loves papaya."

Elena's eyes sparkled. "Well, can I get an introduction to the fox whisperer? Maybe over actual food that isn't stolen from a fruit platter?"

Later, checking her iPhone, Maya found a new follower request. Elena had posted a photo of the orange cat with the caption "met the fox whisperer today 🦊🍈" and tagged her.

Fox mode: activated.
