Fox Mode Activated
The party at Javi's was already mid when I rolled up, rocking my vintage band tee like it made me interesting. Inside, some fake **palm** tree leaned against the wall, looking tragic as hell. I grabbed a warm **orange** soda from the cooler because solid choices were clearly not my vibe tonight.
Then I saw her—Chloe, the human embodiment of having your life together. She was laughing with actual human friends, not scrolling through her phone alone like a certified awkward queen. I tried to make my approach, but then THIS DOG—some chaotic golden retriever puppy—came out of NOWHERE and literally tackled me. My **orange** soda went flying. Splash. Everywhere. On Chloe. On me. On the tragic **palm** tree.
"My bad!" I practically screamed, hands flailing like I was conducting an invisible orchestra. "The **dog** just... the **dog** had different plans!"
Chloe looked at me, then at the orange disaster that was now her white dress. And then? She laughed. Not the fake laugh people do when they're uncomfortable, but like, actually laughing.
"That **dog** has been plotting chaos all night," she said, wiping soda from her arm. "I'm Chloe. You're the girl who just sacrificed a soda to the fashion gods."
"Maya," I managed, still processing that I hadn't died of embarrassment. "And I think the **dog** was more like a furry agent of chaos."
We ended up on the back patio, watching the sun dip below the rooftops. Chloe told me about her obsession with this show where they track wild **fox** families, and how she lowkey wanted to be a wildlife biologist but her parents wanted her to be literally anything else.
"A **fox**?" I asked. "Those chaotic little orange noodles?"
"**Fox** mode is the only mode," she said, and we both cracked up. "They're out here living their best lives, not caring what anyone thinks. Main character energy, you know?"
Something shifted. Maybe it was the orange sunset, maybe it was the **dog** still zooming around inside like a manic pinball, but I felt it—the weird, terrifying feeling of being seen. Like, actually seen.
"Fox mode activated," I said, testing the words.
Chloe grinned. "Welcome to the chaos, Maya."
And just like that, I wasn't the awkward girl with the band tee anymore. I was Maya, future wildlife biology enthusiast, new friend to a chaotic **dog**, and lowkey crushing on the girl who loved **fox**es.
The night was young, and I was just getting started.
