Fox Lake Midnight
The bonfire crackled as Maya stood at the edge of Fox Lake, watching her so-called **friend** Chloe laughing with the popular crowd. Two months ago, they'd promised to be each other's ride-or-die forever. Now Chloe wouldn't even make eye contact across the fire.
"Whatever," Maya muttered, kicking at the sand. "I don't need that vibe anyway."
Her phone buzzed. *Your mom just texted. She's worried.* Maya rolled her eyes. Typical. She wasn't even doing anything sus—just standing alone at a lakeside party while everyone else played beer pong and lived their best lives.
That's when she saw it—a red **fox** emerge from the trees, its coat glowing amber in the firelight. It moved with that unnerving grace wild things have, like it knew something the humans didn't. The fox padded toward the **water**, ignoring the drunken teenagers completely.
Maya's heart did that weird flutter thing. A real fox. At a high school party. It felt... symbolic? Or maybe she was just overthinking everything because her social life had officially tanked.
The fox lapped at the lake, then froze. A golden retriever—someone's **dog**, probably belonging to the host family—bounded toward it, tail wagging like it had found a new bestie. The fox didn't run. It just watched, almost like it was judging the dog's entire wholesome energy.
"No, Buster!" someone yelled. The dog kept approaching.
The fox slipped into the shadows, gone as quickly as it had appeared. Maya stood there, suddenly aware of how quiet the lake had become. The dog plopped down beside her, resting its chin on her sneaker.
"Rough night, huh?" she whispered. The dog thumped its tail.
Chloe finally looked over, saw Maya sitting with the dog, and hesitated. But Maya didn't care anymore. She had better company now.
"You know what?" she said to the dog. "You're a real one."
