Fox in the Water

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline. The senior class end-of-year party raged around her—laughter, splashing, the bass of some mumble rap track she pretended to know. She'd only been invited because Chloe, her lab partner, had taken pity on her.

"You good?" Chloe asked, sliding over with that effortless cool Maya had spent four years trying to fake.

"Yeah. Just... not really a pool person." Maya gestured vaguely at her oversized t-shirt covering her bikini. "Body dysmorphia, you know?"

Chloe nodded, like this was totally normal conversation. Meanwhile, Maya's brain was screaming VULNERABLE ALERT. But then she saw him—Ethan, the guy she'd been lowkey obsessing over since AP Bio, emerging from the water like some sort of fox, all sleek confidence and messy dark hair. His nickname around school was literally "The Fox" because he could charm his way out of detention.

He caught her eye. smiled. Maya thought she might pass out.

"Hey," he said, dripping pool water as he approached. "You're Maya, right? You sit behind me in bio."

She managed something that might have been "yeah" or possibly a dying whale sound.

"My mom made this fruit punch thing," Ethan continued, grabbing a ladle from a giant bowl. "It's got papaya in it. Weird, I know, but actually kinda fire if you give it a chance."

Papaya. Maya had never even seen a papaya. But Ethan was holding out a cup to her, expecting her to take it, to be chill and normal and someone who drank exotic fruit punch at parties.

She took it. "Thanks."

He grinned, and Maya realized something: everyone at this party was faking it. The Fox included. He was just better at it than she was.

"So," he said. "You gonna come in, or what?"

Maya looked at the pool, at Chloe doing a cannonball with zero hesitation, at Ethan waiting for her answer like it actually mattered.

"Yeah," Maya said, dropping her cup and peeling off her t-shirt. "Yeah, I'm coming in."

The papaya punch sat untouched on the patio table as Maya jumped in, making the smallest splash ever, but it felt like the biggest thing in the world.
