Fox in the Water

Maya's hair refused to cooperate, as usual. She stood before her bathroom mirror, dark curls frizzing in every direction like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Another day of hiding under hoodies.

"You going to swim tryouts?" her mom called from downstairs.

Maya groaned. The county team. Where Jessica—the reigning queen of mean—would definitely be watching.

"Maybe!" Maya lied, grabbing her vitamin D gummies. She'd been taking them daily, convinced they'd magically fix her lack of athletic coordination.

At the pool, the air smelled like chlorine and nervous energy. Coach Rodriguez blew her whistle. "Alright, we need a diver. Who's got skills?"

Jessica and her friends snickered. They'd all done gymnastics since preschool. Meanwhile, Maya had spent her summers reading at the community pool, avoiding athletic anything.

But then Maya saw it—the high dive. Empty. Waiting.

"I'll try," she heard herself say. What?

Jessica rolled her eyes so hard Maya wondered if they'd stick. "This should be good."

Maya climbed the ladder, legs shaking. The pool below looked tiny. People looked like ants. She could back down. No one would blame her.

Then she remembered her grandma's words: *You've got fox blood in you, mija. Clever. Quick. Don't let anyone make you small.*

Fox blood. Maya straightened. She wasn't here to be Jessica's joke.

She launched off the board, tucking tight, spinning once—twice—then extending like a needle. The rush. The freedom. For three seconds, she wasn't the awkward girl with impossible hair. She was flying.

She pierced the water with barely a splash.

Silence. Then gasps.

Coach's jaw dropped. "Where did you learn THAT?"

Maya surfaced, slicking back her wet hair, grinning so wide her face hurt. "YouTube?"

Jessica actually looked impressed. "Okay, that was actually sick."

Later, as they sat poolside eating soggy fries, Jessica tossed Maya a water bottle. "You're trying out for the team, right?"

Maya looked at her reflection in the pool water—hair still dripping, confidence finally settling in. Her curls would always be wild. She'd always be the quiet one in class. But she'd found her thing.

"Yeah," Maya said. "I am."

Grandma was right. Fox blood, indeed.
