Fox in the Water

The pool shimmered like liquid mercury under the July sun, and Jayla's stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing it always did when she saw Harper. Not the gross kind. The

kind that made her question literally everything.

"You gonna stand there looking like a lost puppy or actually jump in?" Maya called from the deep end, flicking water in Jayla's direction. Maya had been Jayla's friend since third grade, back when friendship meant sharing fruit snacks and not, like, questioning your entire existence.

Harper surfaced from underwater, her red hair slicked back like some kind of aquatic fox, all clever eyes and knowing smiles. "Come on, Jayla! The water's actually decent for once."

Jayla hesitated. Her phone buzzed in her pocket - probably another text from her mom asking if she wanted to come home early and watch the Great British Bake Off reruns on

cable because her mom still didn't understand streaming.

"Your dog's staring at me again," Harper said, nodding toward where Barnaby - Jayla's ancient, blind golden retriever - lay panting on the patio stones. Barnaby lifted his head at the sound of Harper's voice and thumped his tail, because apparently Harper was his favorite person on earth.

"He's not my dog," Jayla said automatically. "He's a family dog."

"Whatever." Harper's smile softened. "He's got good taste."

Maya groaned. "Are you two gonna flirt all day or what? Some of us are trying to not die of heat exhaustion here."

The word "flirt" hit Jayla like a physical thing. She felt her face heat up - definitely not from the sun. Harper's gaze locked with hers, something unreadable in it. Not confirming. Not denying. Just... waiting.

Jayla's phone buzzed again. This time she actually looked: her brother, sending some TikTok he'd found hilarious.

She slipped the phone back in her pocket and walked toward the pool steps. The water lapped at her ankles, then her knees, then her waist. Harper swam closer, treading water in that effortless way that made it look like breathing underwater was something normal people did.

"You know," Harper said quietly, so only Jayla could hear, "Maya says we're flirting."

Jayla's heart was hammering so hard she was surprised Harper couldn't see it through her chest. "Yeah."

"She's not wrong." Harper's dimple appeared. "I mean, if that's cool with you."

The pool water suddenly felt electric, like the whole world had shifted on its axis. Like she'd been holding her breath for fifteen years and could finally, finally exhale.

"Yeah," Jayla heard herself say. "That's. That's cool with me."

Harper's smile widened, bright and real and slightly terrifying. "Good."

Maya splashed both of them. "FINALLY. Now can we please play categories before I literally melt?"

Barnaby let out a contented sigh from the patio, like even he knew something important had just happened. Jayla ducked underwater, letting the silence wash over her, and when she surfaced, Harper was still watching her with those clever fox eyes, like she was seeing Jayla for the first time.

Like she was really, truly seeing her.

For the first time, Jayla didn't look away.
