Fox in the Pyramid Scheme

Maya stood outside the high school gym, clutching the ridiculous neon bucket hat her bestie Chloe dared her to wear. It glowed like radioactive highlighter against her dark curls. Senior year, and she was still doing dumb stuff for approval.

Inside, the winter dance thumped with bass that vibrated through her Converse. The social pyramid was visible from anywhere—you had the apex cheerleaders and varsity bros owning center floor, then layers descending through band kids, theater weirdos, and everyone else trying to look like they belonged somewhere.

Maya usually floated in the middle, which was fine. She had Chloe. But Chloe was somewhere near the top tonight, dancing with Lucas from the soccer team, leaving Maya stranded by the punch bowl like a lost freshman.

Then she saw the cat.

SomeHOW a ginger kitten had slipped inside, weaving through legs like it owned the place. Maya followed it toward the back corner where the AV club nerds were being weirdly quiet.

"You see it too?"

She jumped. A guy in a black hoodie with perfect eyeliner stood behind her. Fox. That was his name—she'd had AP Bio with him since sophomore year. He drew anatomically correct hearts in his notebook edges and never talked.

"The cat," Maya said, pointing.

Fox grinned. "His name is Pyramid."

"You named a cat Pyramid?"

"My sister found him behind the gym. He kept climbing everything. Seemed fitting." He shrugged, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a bag of Skittles. "Want one? The red ones taste like betrayal."

Maya laughed, and something shifted. Maybe it was the ridiculous hat, maybe the stolen cat, maybe Fox's soft smile that made her stomach do that annoying flutter thing.

"Your hat," he said. "It's... brave."

"That's code for 'completely insane.'"

"No." He stepped closer. "It's memorable. Like you."

The bass dropped. Chloe was still dancing with Lucas. The social pyramid was still intact. But Maya found herself grinning like an idiot, neon hat and all, as Fox handed her a Skittle and said, "Wanna help me catch Pyramid before he gets into the bleachers?"

"Absolutely."

Sometimes the best moments happened outside the pyramid entirely.
