Fox in the Pool
Marcus's first day as a country club cabana boy was supposed to be chill—just handing out towels and fetching drinks for rich kids who'd never worked a day in their lives. But somewhere between the locker room and the pool deck, he'd managed to lose his staff uniform hat. Again.
"Bro, you literally had it five minutes ago," said Jasmine, the senior cabana girl who'd been stuck training him. She adjusted her own hat with practiced ease, like she was born wearing it. "Without it, you're basically a random dude crashing the pool."
Marcus groaned. His mom had washed his uniform last night and somehow the hat had vanished into the laundry void. Now he was running late, hatless, and about to face pool manager Mrs. Chen—whose legendary hatred of uniform violations was the stuff of employee group chat lore.
"I'll just... keep my head down," Marcus said, though they both knew that wasn't happening.
But things went from bad to catastrophic when a flash of orange fur darted past the pool fence. A literal fox—like, the animal—trotted onto the deck like it owned the place. Someone screamed. Kids jumped out of the pool. Water everywhere.
"Is that a FOX?" some girl in expensive goggles shouted, because apparently teenagers still lost their minds over wildlife.
The fox beelined straight toward the cabana station, where Mrs. Chen was currently berating a group of freshmen about their improper towel-folding technique. And there, tucked behind the stack of fresh beach towels, sat Marcus's missing hat—or something that looked exactly like it, anyway. The fox snatched it up and bolted.
Marcus didn't think. He just started running, sprinting after the fox like his entire future employment depended on it (which, honestly, it kind of did). He chased it through the gardens, past the tennis courts, until the fox finally dropped the hat near the creek and vanished into the woods.
Panting, Marcus retrieved the hat—which was definitely NOT his, but rather Mrs. Chen's prized vintage staff cap from 1998. He walked back to find everyone staring at him like he'd grown a second head.
"Dude," whispered another cabana boy, "you just ran down a fox. For Mrs. Chen's hat. You're literally a legend now."
Jasmine just shook her head, grinning. "Welcome to the club, hat boy."
Maybe this job wouldn't be so bad after all.
